The Final Act

By Chaplain George Nix

Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.

– Psalm 71:18

He walks slower than he used to. Once erect posture is replaced by stooped  shoulders. He tires more easily now… Long gone are the days of youth when he, against all odds, defeated a giant with a sling and a stone.

David has seen God do great things in his life. He has also seen some hard times. Quite frankly, some of them caused by decisions he has made.

David is facing old age, which can be a formidable giant. Instead of living in the past, David is seeking God in prayer, asking Him to not forsake him. Until… he succeeds in his goal to  “…declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to everyone who is to come (Psalms 71:18).”

David wasn’t looking for a rocking chair. To sit back and relax. He had a goal. To make an impact on the next generation.

I can relate to what David is going through. I’m getting older too. I’m not going to let that bother me. There’s still a lot of work to be done. My goal is similar to David’s. To tell the next generation about God’s power, and His love. The love of God that changes lives.

So, wherever you are in life, don’t give up. Encourage others not to give up. Keep praying, keep serving God. He has plans for you!
