Experiencing Joy is not dependent on our circumstances

Experiencing Joy is not dependent on our circumstances

Dictionary.com defines joy as “The emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation.”

Many times we equate joy to be the same as happiness. I tend to disagree. Happiness depends on what is “happening.” Dependant on the circumstances we find around us.  Joy runs much deeper… It can still exist even in times of adversity. Author and speaker Rick Warren adds his own definition: “Joy is the settled assurance that God is in control of all the details of my life, the quiet confidence that ultimately everything is going to be alright, and the determined choice to praise God in every situation.”

Here’s what the Bible says about joy…

James 1:2-3 ” Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.”  James says we can joy in the midst of trials, that the testing helps develop perseverance.

Proverbs 17:22 “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”  A joyful heart is like good medicine, and it’s easier to take than some prescription drugs! Costs less too!

Hebrews 12:2 “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joyset before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”  Jesus is our example of one who never lost His joy, and endured so much for us!

And last, one of my favorites…

Psalm 30:5 “For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may remain for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Joy comes in the morning.. let’s never lose that hope and assurance!
