We Will Sing of the Steadfast Love of the Lord

We Will Sing of the Steadfast Love of the Lord

I will sing of the steadfast love of the lord forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations

– Psalm 89:1

Steadfastness:  Not subject to change

Throughout history, our world, cultures and diverse civilizations have seen change.  Some changes have been drastic and lasting, others have been more subtle and nuanced.  However, there has always been a season of change throughout the history of the world.

One thing that has not changed, however, since the beginning of time is the love of God for humanity.  We see his love for the nation of Israel throughout the stories recounted in the Old Testament Scriptures.  Even when the Israelites were in cycles when they were not following God—God was chasing after them.  However, no other place was his steadfast love shown to humankind than when he sent his son to die on the cross for the sins of the world.

Over the last many days our lives have been changed once more.  They have been turned upside down.  The way we move as a nation has changed.  The manner in which we care for our patients and residents has been changed. Our faith communities have had to change the way they do ministry and the way we gather for worship.  Even the way we remember our loved ones who have passed has changed in the wake of all that has happened.  It seems as if chaos is in charge.

But in the midst of all that is happening, like generations before us, the steadfast love of God is ever present.  At some point, who knows when, our lives will return to routine.  Hopefully we will look back and remember to “sing of the steadfast love of the Lord.”  While we may look at this time with fear, concern, and uncertainty, several years from now, hopefully we will look back and share with our friends, and our descendants that the Lord was faithful and his love carried us through in the midst of our current crisis.

Prayer:  Mighty God whose love is steadfast and consistent to all mankind throughout the ages, comfort us with your presence in these times of trial and uncertainty so that we will once again be able to praise you for your faithfulness to us all.
