Faithful Forever
By Chaplain Gary McAbee
“Blessed are those whose help is in the God of Jacob…he remains faithful forever.”
– Psalm 146:5-6
I was driving down the road one day when I heard a radio advertisement for a new sandwich at a fast food restaurant that included the words, “For a limited time only.” When we stop and think about it, that’s a message we hear over and over again as we go about our daily lives. An ad for a local business says, “For the first 100 customers.” A TV commercial for a new product tells us that “Quantities are limited,” or includes the words “While supplies last.” A newspaper circular for a special sale reads in bold letters, “This week only.”
In many ways, the words “for a limited time only” are a good description of the world we’re living in today. It seems like everything around us is temporary, that nothing is permanent, that nothing lasts and nothing ever stays the same. People think there’s no one we can count on and nothing we can be sure of.
But in contrast to what the world around us may think, the Psalmist tells us there is One who we can always count on. The psalmist tells us that the Lord God “remains faithful forever.” To say that God is faithful is to remind ourselves that in spite of all the uproar and upheaval taking place in our world today, in spite of the many uncertainties that we may face, no matter what else is happening around us, God can be counted on. There is no power in the world that is greater than God’s power, and no love in the world that is greater than the love that God has for you and me. Our God is greater than any circumstance we may encounter and more powerful than any obstacle that tries to block our path. God’s mercy extends to all generations. God’s grace flows throughout all the days of our lives. God’s lovingkindness never ends – He is faithful forever.
No matter what comes our way, no matter what life may throw at us, no matter how good things are at the moment or how difficult our struggle may be, no matter what we may have to endure or go through, GOD IS FAITHFUL. God’s love and God’s abiding presence are not available to us “for a limited time only.” God will not leave us just because the warranty runs out. God won’t turn His back on us because He has loved us for too long. God is with us and will be there for us – today, tomorrow and always. People can disappoint us, our health may fail us, and circumstances might discourage us, but we can always count on God. God is always on our side and God keeps His promises, both now and forevermore. The Lord remains faithful forever. Praise the Lord!
