Closing Shop

John Carl Reeser

Ecclesiastes 12:2-4 English Standard Version (ESV)
2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return after the rain, 3 in the day when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men are bent, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those who look through the windows are dimmed, 4 and the doors on the street are shut—when the sound of the grinding is low, and one rises up at the sound of a bird, and all the daughters of song are brought low

Closing Shop

Guess it’s time to close shop and move on.

Not many folks pass this way anymore

Since they put in the bypass.

Those that do stop

Find our stuff’s outdated

Or they’re puzzled what it even is!

Besides it’s getting dilapidated.

The wiring’s frayed, last century I ‘spec.

The plumbing’s leaking

Water heater barely heats

Basement leaks

And the roofs worn white with the snow
& rain

The windows are glazed from the dust and wind

The stove barely kept the frost out last winter

The blade’s about to fall off the fan

It’s hot as blazes in here even with the windows open!

Yep, it’s time to close shop and move on.

Let’s turn off the water and electricity.

Board up the windows

And let the mice have it.

Yep it’s time to close shop and move on.

To a place right on the main road

Where the weather’s ‘purt near perfect

Everyday the store will be filled with folks

Finding just what they need

Or perhaps not even shopping

Just stopping to say hello

A store we can keep open forever.

Yep, it’s time to close shop and move on.
